A rock magnetic investigation was carried out on a sedimentary core taken from the distal portion of the Bengal Fan in order to reconstruct the South Asian monsoon variability during the past 800 kyr. The 10.2 m long piston core MR0503-PC3, recovered at a water depth of 4400 m, consists of clay to silty clay with minor amounts of nannofossils. An age model for the MR0503-PC3 core is established by correlating a relative paleointensity record of the core [Suganuma Y., Yamazaki, T., Kanamatsu, T., Hokanishi, N., 2008. Relative paleointensity record during the last 800 kyr from the equatorial Indian Ocean: implication for relationship between inclination and intensity variations. Global changes in intensity of the Earth's magnetic field during the past 800 kyr. Nature. 399, 249–252.]. The age model is consistent with the published ages of tephra layers intercalated in the core, and shows continuous sedimentation during the past 800 kyr.Temporal variations in rock magnetic proxies for the magnetic concentration (ARM, IRM, and HIRM), the grain size (Mrs/Ms), and the composition (S?0.3T and S?0.1T) show that the amount of fine-grained magnetite increased during interglacial stages, and then gradually decreased toward the following glacial maxima. This indicates that the supply of fine-grained magnetite probably originated from areal expansion and/or increased pedogenic activity in the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers catchment. Increases during warmer periods suggest intensification of the South Asian summer monsoon during interglacial stages. During marine isotope stages (MIS) 15–11, enhancement of fine-grained magnetite and increased hematite and maghemite contributions are observed. These suggest a significant intensification of the South Asian summer monsoon during this period. Our record and other paleoclimatic reconstructions mainly from the low and mid-latitudes suggest that a major climatic event possibly occurred prior to the mid-Brunhes event (MBE), but the timing is not synchronous. 相似文献

A simple jovian cloud scheme has been developed for the Oxford Planetary Unified model System (OPUS). NH3-ice, NH4SH-solid, H2O-ice and H2O-liquid clouds have been modeled in Southern hemisphere limited area simulations of Jupiter. We found that either three or four of the condensates existed in the model. For a deep atmospheric water abundance close to solar composition, an NH3-ice deck above 0.7 bar, an NH4SH-solid deck above 2.5 bar and a H2O-liquid deck with a base at about 7.5 bar and frozen cloud tops formed. If a depleted deep water abundance is assumed, however, a very compact cloud structure develops, where an H2O-ice cloud forms by direct sublimation above 3 bar. The condensates constitute good tracers of atmospheric motion, and we have confirmed that zonal velocities determined from manual feature tracking in the modeled cloud layers agree reasonably well with the modeled zonal velocities. Dense and elevated clouds form over latitudes with strong atmospheric upwelling and depleted clouds exist over areas with strong downwelling. In the NH3-ice deck this leads to elevated cloud bands over the zones in the domain and thin clouds over the belts, which is consistent with the observationally deduced distribution. Due to changes in the vertical velocity pattern in the deeper atmosphere, the NH4SH-solid and water cloud decks are more uniform. This modeled cloud structure thus includes the possibility of more frequent water cloud observations in belts, as this deeper deck could be more easily detected under areas with thin NH3-ice clouds. Large scale vortices appeared spontaneously in the model and were characterized by elevated NH3-ice clouds, as expected from observations. Cr-droped and Cr,Li-doped forsterite crystals were grown and their optical properties were investigated. It was shown that when only Cr is doped, Cr3+ is substituted at the site of low crystal field, and the energy level 2E lie above the 4T2 level, while 4T2 is just above 2E when Cr and Li are codoped. Sediment properties, such as water content and density, have been used to estimate the dry and wet weights, as well as the volume of sediment recovered and discharged, during benthic impact experiments conducted in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The estimates show that the weights of dry (355-1332 t) and wet sediment (1651-4888 t) recovered during the experiments, are not only a function of the total duration and distance covered during the experiment, but also depend on water content and density of the sediment. Estimation of dry sediment and its volumetric ratio in the discharge, are key parameters for calculating the discharged volume. The estimated volume of wet sediment recovered (1427-4049 m 3 ) as well as discharged (2693-6951 m 3 ) during the experiments, provide important inputs to evaluate the sediment resettlement and migration. Using these estimates, the average depth of excavation on the seafloor, can also been calculated. However, the stages of sediment recovery and discharge are expressed differently in some of the experiments. In order to standardize these, different stages have been identified, and definitions of certain terms have been suggested, for use in the future. The methods of calculating different properties, as well as weight and volume of discharged sediment are described in the paper for use in other applications concerning deep-sea discharges. 相似文献

The stability of the power law scaling of earthquake recurrence time distribution in a given space–time window is investigated,
taking into account the magnitude of completeness and the effective starting time of aftershock sequences in earthquake catalogs
from Southern California and Japan. A new method is introduced for sampling at different distances from a network of target
events. This method allows the recurrence times to be sampled many times on the same area. Two power laws with unknown exponents
are assumed to govern short- and long-recurrence-time ranges. This assumption is developed analytically and shown to imply
simple correlation between these power laws. In practice, the results show that this correlation structure is not satisfied
for short magnitude cutoffs (m
c
= 2.5, 3.5, 4.5), and hence the recurrence time distribution departs from the power law scaling. The scaling parameters obtained
from the stack of the distributions corresponding to different magnitude thresholds are quite different for different regions
of study. It is also found that significantly different scaling parameters adjust the distribution for different magnitude
thresholds. In particular, the power law exponents decrease when the magnitude cutoff increases, resulting in a slower decrease
of the recurrence time distribution, especially for short time ranges. For example, in the case of Japan, the exponent p2 of the power law scaling at large recurrence times follows roughly the relation: , where m

Water-soluble dicarboxylic acids (DCAs), ketoacids, and α-dicarbonyls in the marine aerosol samples collected over the Southern
Ocean and western Pacific Ocean were determined. Oxalic acid was the most abundant species, followed by malonic acid and then
succinic acid. It is suggested that aerosol concentrations of the organics over the Southern Ocean in this work represent
their global background levels. Over the Southern Ocean, total concentrations of DCAs ranged from 2.9 to 7.2 ng m−3 (average: 4.5 ng m−3), ketoacids from 0.14 to 0.40 ng m−3 (av.: 0.28 ng m−3), and dicarbonyls from 0.06 to 0.29 ng m−3 (av.: 0.11 ng m−3). Over the western Pacific, total concentrations of DCAs ranged from 1.7 to 170 ng m−3 (av.: 60 ng m−3), ketoacids from 0.08 to 5.3 ng m−3 (av.: 1.8 ng m−3), and dicarbonyls from 0.03 to 4.6 ng m−3 (av.: 0.95 ng m−3). DCAs over the western Pacific have constituted a large fraction of organic aerosols with a mean DCAs-C/TC (total carbon)
of 7.0% (range: 0.59–14%). Such a high value was in contrast to the low DCAs-C/TC (av.: 1.8%; range: 0.89–4.0%) for the Southern
Ocean aerosols. Based on the relative abundances and latitudinal distributions of these organics, we propose that long-range
atmospheric transport is more important over the western Pacific Ocean, in contrast, in situ photochemical production is more significant over the Southern Ocean although absolute concentrations of the organics are

The seismometer network of the Japanese expressway system has been enhanced since the 1995 Kobe earthquake. Using earthquake information from the instruments, the expressways are closed if the peak ground acceleration (PGA) is larger than or equal to 80cm/s2. The aim of this regulation is to avoid secondary disasters, e.g. cars running into the collapsed sections. However, recent studies on earthquake damage have revealed that expressway structures are not seriously damaged under such‐level of earthquake motion. Hence, we may think of relaxing the regulation of expressway closure. But before doing this, it is necessary to examine the effects of shaking to automobiles since the drivers may encounter difficulties in controlling their vehicles and traffic accidents may occur. In this study, a vehicle was modelled with a six‐degree‐of‐freedom system and its responses were investigated with respect to PGA, peak ground velocity (PGV) and Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) seismic intensity using five ground motion records. It was observed that the response of the vehicle shows a larger amplitude for the record that has larger response spectrum in the long period range compared to other records. However, similar response amplitudes of the vehicle were observed for all the records with respect to the JMA seismic intensity. The response characteristics of the vehicle model may be very useful for decision‐making regarding the relaxation of the expressway closure under seismic motion. A vast amount of earthquake response records of an observation tower are used together with microtremor data to investigate various aspects of the dynamic behaviour of the soil-structure system. It is found that separation of the soil from the structure occurs under large dynamic loads, leading to changes in the predominant frequency of the system. As a result of the decreasing of the soil support at the side walls of the foundation, the stress caused by the structural weight on the bottom soil increases during earthquakes. With regard to its practical applicability, a linear sway-rocking model is applied for numerical modelling of the soil-structure system. Alterations in the soil support as a result of soil non-linearity and separation of the structure from the soil are investigated by comparing recorded and simulated structural response. The influence of each of these factors on the softening of the soil support is distinctly assessed. An empirical relationship between the peak ground velocity and the soil constants for earthquake excitations of different magnitude is presented. 相似文献
